My life philosophy can best be described as Carpe Diem! I love to live my life to the fullest. Over the course of my life, I’ve been a nurse and a foster parent, homeschooled my children, adopted my 4 youngest kids, raised beef cows, pigs, rabbits, chickens, and briefly goats (never again), volunteered in my church and community, held office locally, got a Bachelors degree and, more recently, finished an MBA in nonprofit management and project management.
I love to spend time with my 6 great kids and 3 adorable (and pretty much perfect) grandchildren. I live in Northeastern PA on 53 of the most beautiful but underutilized acres. In my free time, I enjoy reading, oil painting, gardening, kayaking, and serving in my community.
Service to my community is deeply ingrained in me. I currently am serving my third term as township auditor and Chair of the Auditing Committee. As a former ICU nurse, a continuous process of improvement (assess, plan, act, and reassess) is deeply ingrained in me. I’ve created quick reference guides and templates for those auditors who will follow in my footsteps. I’ve also recently been consulting to help new auditors in another community to learn the process. With my guidance, these auditors were able to submit the audit just three days past the deadline despite starting more than a month late.
My latest project, a nonprofit geared toward helping people navigate the human services system, stemmed from my own difficulties in getting treatment and services for my youngest son. Initially, I had hoped that to work collaboratively with local nonprofits in these efforts. Unfortunately, there were barriers such as funding insecurity, redundancy of efforts, a lack of communication of available resources even between some organizations in the same field, and, in some cases, money spent on activities that resulted in products that were not user-friendly. What was abundant within these local nonprofits and government agencies, however, was true dedication to making our community great for all. InUnity was created to fill a specific void in our community and as a resource for all. In addition, I have established myself as a consultant, sharing my skills, knowledge, and dedication to effective altruism on a project by project basis.
